What happens during an oral cancer screening?

Oral cancer screenings are an integral part of your oral hygiene and health. A diagnosis of oral cancer may be scary, but with early identification and treatment, many of our patients go on to live normal, active, and healthy lives. Regardless, patients in the Dallas, Texas, area will need to have oral cancer evaluations performed regularly to catch it as soon as possible!

What occurs during an oral cancer screening with your dentist at SK2 Dental?

During an oral cancer evaluation, Dr. Stanley Ngo will perform a comprehensive exam that includes examining the following:

  • Lips
  • Cheeks
  • Tongue
  • The floor of the mouth

He will be looking for any signs or symptoms of oral cancer. He may also use special tools, including magnifying glasses or mirrors, to better view these areas. Dr. Ngo will also palpate the surrounding area to check for any lumps or bumps possibly indicative of oral cancer.

During the appointment, our dental team might ask you questions about lifestyle habits that can contribute to an increased risk of developing oral cancer. After completing the examination and evaluation process, we will discuss our findings and provide recommendations if necessary.

What happens if something is found during my oral cancer screening?

If abnormalities are found during this process, Dr. Ngo may recommend additional testing to determine if the abnormality is cancerous or benign. Depending on your particular case, this may include a biopsy of the affected area. If oral cancer is detected, Dr. Ngo will take the time to discuss treatment options with you and assist you in finding the best course of care for your needs.
